Caring for wild birds

Winter Care
Food and water is scarce in winter be sure to help out our feathered friends with some of the ideas below.
  • Many birds look for resources in the Fall so start filling feeders then
  • Do not place feeders to close to low bushes where predators may hide
  • Place feeders near trees or other places birds can go to for safety
  • Fill feeders with Suet, Niger thistle seed & black sunflower seeds
  • Provide a heated bird bath in colder climates were water may freeze
  • Continue to fill feeders through winter as birds find their resource in the Fall they may not have another birdfeeder to go to.
Spring Care

  • Birds returning from the South will be hungry as well as nesting birds caring for their young
  • Do some spring cleaning, clean birds feeders removing debris and making any necessary repairs.  Clean up the old hulls on the ground.
  • Consider adding more bird feeders to accommodate the number of birds you have.  Place feeders around your property to discourage aggressive behavior.

  • Cover feeders to keep spring rain, this will help pervert mildew

  • Offer treats such as mealworms, fruit or nectar

  • Plant early blooming flowers for a natural food for Hummingbirds or Orioles.
